Polypropylene vials are an economical alternative to glass for some applications. The vial is primarily constructed from high-quality, durable polypropylene or polymethyl pentene (PMP). This plastic is typically chosen for its chemical resistance, inertness, and transparency. Polypropylene is the most popular plastic material. Polypropylene vials have heat resistance of up to 135 degrees Celsius and are commonly used in chromatographic experiments. PMP has higher heat resistance – up to 175 degrees Celsius – and is transparent, increasing the sample’s visibility inside the sample bottle. The vial typically has a standard 9mm outer diameter, making it compatible with a wide range of autosampler systems commonly used in laboratories.

The slit allows ambient gas to equalize the gas in the vial so that a vacuum is not created in the vial from the tight seal around the needle.
If coring or clogging from a narrow needle or needle deflection from highly durable septa material is a concern, then choosing a pre-slit septum is a better choice.
A PTFE/Silicone with a slitted septum allows for easier needle penetration as well as to release of the vacuum that forms when a large volume of sample is withdrawn from a vial.
